Call me Kuveni
Call me Kuveni is a story about women which strives to depict the realities of women’s experiences through five goddesses. It is also a fictionalised retelling of the origins of Sri Lanka and her people through the perspective of Kuveni, who is known in Sri Lanka as the Yaksha Queen or Devil Queen of Sri Lanka.
Professional practice
This MA thesis, Call me Kuveni, is an extract of a larger work that will eventually be a novel. This creative work, alongside the exegesis, examines the complexities of sisterhood, womanhood and our ties with the world we live in.
The work draws on various mythologies: Sri Lankan and South Asian, West African, Mesopotamian and Chinese. Kuveni is known in Sri Lanka as the Yaksha Queen, or otherwise known as the Devil Queen of Sri Lanka, who mothered the “Singha” people. While these are the main lore that were incorporated, it is important to note that due to the age of these mythologies, they have influenced the histories and cultures of lands beyond where they originated. Furthermore, these mythologies were used for inspiration, and this story is a work of fiction.
The exegesis takes a slightly different approach. It focuses on the writer’s personal experience with the work. Relaying the societal expectations and realities for women and their relationship with their sisters provides context for the creative work. However, both pieces prioritise the protagonist Kuveni’s voice and acknowledge that history has pushed her aside, as it has with many women.
