Xi Jie is a Singapore-based artist whose practice explores the multiplicities of place, its agents and the contextual residues it carries.

Working across objects, video and print, he embraces conversations as a method to bridge embodied experiences, bodily labours and the aesthetics of empathy. His works often weave together mischief and (re)imagination, offering alternative encounters with art and the everyday.

No Nanas

A montage of objects and images found in Pekan Nanas (Pineapple Town), Pontian District, Johor, Malaysia.

Once one of the largest production base for pineapple plantations in the region, the small town has since waned following its former eminence. Notwithstanding this, through symbolic persistence within signs and similitudes, the fruit has conquered a cultural space for itself which outlives its own agricultural value.
